Lakewood Elementary School is proud to offer one of the district’s longest-standing dual language programs. Lakewood’s program has been used as a model when rolled out to other DISD elementary schools. Demand for this program continues to grow year after year. 

 

 

What is the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion Program?

It allows two different student populations to learn a second language through content instruction while maintaining their dominant language.

 

Who can participate?

  • Students who speak English as their dominant language
  • Students who speak Spanish as their dominant language
  • Students who speak both languages
  • Students who speak any language other than English as their dominant language

How does it work?

In K-2nd grades, students receive:

  • 120 minutes per day of Reading Language Arts in Spanish
  • 45 minutes per day of Social Studies in Spanish
  • 45 minutes per day of Science in Spanish
  • 90 minutes of Math in English

In 3rd – 5th grades, students receive:

  • 60 minutes of Reading Language Arts in Spanish
  • 60 minutes of Reading Language Arts in English
  • 45 minutes of Social Studies in Spanish
  • 45 minutes of Science in Spanish
  • 90 minutes of Math in English

Please note that Math is always taught in English. Students get Reading Language Arts in English starting in 3rd grade.

All other subjects are taught in Spanish.

Family Commitment to the program

If you wish to participate in the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion Program, you are asked to:

  • Commit to your student’s participation in grades K-5 to ensure long-term success
  • Strengthen the Dual Language culture by participating as much as possible in Dual Language activities and events on campus
  • If necessary, take advantage of parent training and resources offered free of charge by the district
  • Support the Dual Language program through activities aimed at advocating for the program and improving parent involvement

How do I apply?

Families with kindergartners wishing to apply for the Dual Language Program at Lakewood

in the 2019-2020 school year should attend one of the info sessions offered Wednesday Feb. 6 or Wednesday March 6, 5.30-6.30pm, at Lakewood Elementary School.

 

A third info session will be available during Kinder Roundup at the school on Wednesday March 27, 5.30-6.30pm. The deadline to apply for the program is Friday April 5, 2019.
